As we all know, title tags are essential for the structure of every web document. By using title tags, we can differentiate the content of a web page. Title tags are only used for titles, do not use them to enlarge or bold text.
Note: At the end of this article I’ve listed two common title tag mistakes bloggers make. Don’t miss them!
Definition of Title Tag
W3Schools provides a clear definition of the title tag:
H1 - H6
The tag is used to define the title of a web document.
“According to W3Schools H1 is the vital first heading in any web document, but it is the least important heading in a web document, and its importance is very low compared to other heading tags.”
The defined title tags are:
H1 Some text goes here
H2 Enter some text here
H3 Enter some text here
H4 Enter some text here
H5 Enter some text here
H6Enter some text here
The h1 tag should be the main heading, followed by h2, h3, etc. h1 is usually the boldest font, while h6 is the smallest font.
Don’t be confused and stop thinking that the title tag is just the format of the web page and that the search engine title tag is just a way to categorize the content of the web page.
Title tags have various attributes that make a website user-friendly, but search engines only use these defined titles to index the structure and content of web documents, including blog posts .
In other words, you can say that heading tags are used to show the web document structure.
How to use title tags for SEO?
Aside from the web design perspective, there are also a few things you should know about title tags.
– Purpose of using title tag
The main purpose of using different headings to categorize your content is to make your design more user-friendly and it will be easier for people to understand your website just by reading the subheadings.
As we know that H1 tag is the most important tag, so whenever you use it as a webpage title, try to let people know about your website at a glance. So, h1 tag should be able to describe what your webpage is all about at a glance.
H1-H6 Hierarchy
The hierarchical structure of a web page should be as follows:
H1 is in front,
H2 is at the back.
H3 is at the back.
H4 is at the back.
H5 is at the back.
H6 is behind.
In order to improve the SEO effect of web pages, such a hierarchical structure should be followed.
– Title tag with keywords
Keywords are the first priority of any SEO expert. For this purpose, we first research the best keywords according to the web page and then divide these keywords into focus keywords, primary keywords, secondary keywords, and tertiary keywords. The focus keyword is always the keyword of the web page. It is best to add the focus keyword to the title, meta tags, and H1 tags of the web page.
– How often you use title tags (especially h1 tags)
It is recommended to use h1 tag for every web page, because h1 tag should be like a newspaper title, and other contents should be organized with subheadings according to the hierarchy of title tag. The use of subheadings depends on how the content is structured.
The latest H1 tag in HTML5
In previous versions of HTML, designers were only allowed to use one H1 tag per web document. At the time, people would simply wrap the corporate logo on the web page with the H1 tag (which is essential for any business web page), and then use the H2 tag as the beginning of the main title of the web page. But with the update of HTML5, designers can use multiple H1 tags on a web page according to the needs of web design.
For example: single page website.
Title tags are crucial for on-page SEO optimization of your blog posts. A common mistake made by new bloggers is overusing H2 or H3 tags, or sometimes even skipping H2 tags and using only H3 tags.
This is not a good practice and may affect your on-page SEO score. To learn more about on-page SEO, read this guide .
