How to create a Twitter profile

Forrest Pykes Mar 25, 2025

When I talk about the social media presence of our brand on our blog or profile, we always talk about Twitter.

Yesterday, I was consulting with a client and I talked about Twitter and other social media sites.

I was surprised that he had never heard of Twitter, and I realized that there are many newcomers like him who don't know about Twitter, and a guide to creating a Twitter account would help them get started with Twitter.

So, here I am sharing the step by step guide to create a Twitter account, this will be a very basic guide with screenshots to understand the whole process.

If you are using a branded domain, I recommend creating two Twitter accounts. One for your profile and another for your blog.

What is Twitter and why do I need a Twitter profile?

Let me briefly introduce Twitter because newbies may not know it. Twitter is a microblogging tool where you can share your opinions, links and views in 280 characters. The main advantage of Twitter is its huge user base and it is one of the most popular social networking sites after Facebook.

You can use Twitter to connect with many other like-minded people, talk to them and build relationships with them. From a marketing perspective, you can use Twitter to market your blog, drive traffic and build an identity for your brand.

Before you use Twitter for the first time, remember that it is a social networking site. Therefore, you need to behave appropriately and follow all social media etiquette to stand out. Okay, now let's get straight to the point.

Step-by-step tutorial to create a Twitter account:

Go to Twitter.com , click "Sign Up," and start filling out the information I explain below. Keep in mind that Twitter is always changing its homepage design, so the process will remain the same, just the button placement may change over time.

Once you are on the Twitter homepage, enter your full name, email address, and password to create your Twitter account. If you are creating an account for a blog, make sure to use your brand name as your full name.

For example: SidelinePlay. You may want to check if the username is available before signing up using a free service like Namechk .

How to create a Twitter profile

Click "Sign up for Twitter" and on the next page, Twitter will use your name as your username (if available). You can also change it now or later without any problems. However, I recommend sticking to one username from day one for better branding.

Click Create My Account and the next steps are just a click away. Twitter will offer some recommended accounts for you to follow, you can just close this window because my advice is to follow Twitter accounts that are meaningful and relevant to you. I will discuss this in a subsequent article.

Verify your Twitter account

You will receive an email from the Twitter verification team, click on the link in the email to verify your account. Remember, this is an important step. Once your account is verified, you will be taken to the Twitter homepage and logged into your Twitter account. You will see something similar to the following (as shown in the image below):

Complete your Twitter profile:

So far, you have created your Twitter account, but it is like a blank canvas. You need to add information to make it beautiful and personal. The first thing you need to do is click on the Settings button to fill in important information about you or your brand. You can read about what to write in your Twitter bio to get an idea of what kind of information you should write here.

A big mistake I see a lot of users make is protecting their tweets by checking the box under Twitter Privacy. I recommend you not to use it because once you use the Protect My Tweets feature, other users can’t see your tweets unless you allow them to follow you, and you’re missing out on a great opportunity to reach the masses.

Click on the Profile section and enter all the details. I strongly recommend you to use your website URL in the Profile field as there are many web services and Twitter directories that index Twitter profiles and you can enjoy the benefit of free backlinks.

How do I get started with Twitter?

The next step is to learn how to use Twitter, and you should know basic Twitter terms and abbreviations. I'll explain some of the terms and abbreviations below and link to some of the best Twitter resources on the web for learning how to use Twitter.

  1. Tweets: Twitter status updates of 280 characters or less are called tweets.
  2. RT (Retweet): When someone retweets a Twitter update.
  3. @Reply: When you want to send a public message to someone, you can use @username to compose a Tweet. Example: @Sidelineplay, your message
  4. DM (Direct Message): You use DM when you want to send a private message to someone.
  5. #Hashtag: Adding a hashtag before important keywords in your tweet message will help your tweet be better discovered in search. Example: Hi, I'm Forrest and I blog about #WordPress and #SEO.
  6. Twitter Username: Your username is your Twitter username. Example: Forrest Pykes

It may take you 1-2 hours to learn the basics of Twitter, but once you know all the basics, you will be able to use Twitter effectively and successfully.
