How Do Bloggers Make Money?
How much money you can make depends on how much traffic you can get and how big your email database is.
Seriously, if you are willing to work hard and keep updating your blog, your traffic and income will continue to grow. You can write any post at any time on your laptop, no matter where you are. No matter what, keep at it! Building traffic takes time, and blogging = freedom.
Some of the most profitable bloggers actually have very few readers, they just know their readers well enough to maximize their revenue per page view and email subscription. Most professional bloggers will calculate their monthly page view and email subscription revenue.
High traffic = high revenue
If you get 1,000 pageviews per month (very easy), you can make $10-25 per month, which will cover the cost of running the blog.
However, if you get 100,000 page views per month, you can make $1,000-$25,000 per month. In rare cases, I've seen bloggers in profitable niches (like insurance) making $0.20 per page view, but $0.02-$0.05 is more realistic.
Therefore, the more people your blog attracts, the more money you can make.
The more time you invest in writing high-quality content, the more traffic and email library you will gain.
This is why I love SEO (Search Engine Optimization) so much, it really is the key to growing your blog. If you haven't learned about it yet, please take the time to research and apply these strategies, they really work. SEO can make you money in the long run. Organic traffic from Google is by far the most sustainable traffic strategy.
Your email library is your most important asset
As a blogger, your most important asset is your email database. This is your readers, your tribe. They will return to your blog and continue to read your content, building enough trust with you that they will buy the products you sell or click on the links to the products you recommend.
While you can make money from display ads, the biggest profit opportunity is with your email base. Million-dollar bloggers can make $1-$5 per month per email subscriber. Of course, this is a very extreme example. Making $1-$3 per month per email subscriber is much more realistic.
During the recent Double 11 shopping festival, a blogger sold over 500,000 items in one day by sending emails to his less than 2,000 subscribers. If you have 10,000 subscribers, the power can be amazing.
Once you start your blog, create your email database or list immediately.

15 Ways to Make Money Blogging
1.Google Adsense
Blogger income potential: $0.1 – $0.5 per page view
Google Adsense allows you to place multimedia ads on your website (Google Display Network).
If you are a new blogger, monetizing through Google Adsense is the easiest way, but you won’t make a lot of money from it.
Even if you attract a thousand visitors per month, you can only make $50 at most from Google Ads. But that's just a start! In the first year of blogging, you can use Google Adsense, then switch to ad networks to get higher CPMs (cost per thousand impressions) and CPCs (cost per click).
In fact, I have never seen anyone with an annual salary of one million yuan using Chinese Google Adsense. After all, advertising fees in Europe and the United States are generally high, so you may have to lower your expectations a bit.
2. Advertising/Publisher Network
Blogger's potential monthly income: $10,000 and up
Once you reach at least 25,000 page views per month, you can ditch Google Adsense and start working directly with an ad network, who will manage the ad placements on your site to ensure you get the most revenue from your ads. Typically these ad networks will charge a fee of 20%-40% of your site's ad revenue.
Even though you have to pay a commission, you can earn more revenue by working with these ad/publisher networks than you would by working directly with Google.
In fact, when you reach a certain position in your niche, advertisers will actively seek you out. For example, this financial media website has already had financial institutions discuss cooperation in the second month.
Some bloggers are so enthusiastic about this that they make over $400,000 per month just from display ads. There are usually ad/publisher networks that cater specifically to your niche.
So just do a simple Google search for ad networks and you'll probably find a few. Some companies are picky about who they work with, so you may need to contact multiple companies.
3. Affiliate Marketing
Blogger Earnings Potential: $5 – $500 per Click
Affiliate marketing is actually very common abroad. You can earn more income by placing affiliate ads on your website. There are affiliate networks in almost every niche market. Every time someone registers through your link, you can earn money and get paid by recommending products or services.
These affiliate ads are a win-win situation for both advertisers and bloggers because the advertiser gets a confirmed signup and you (the blogger) may get paid more than just the clicks.
You can earn $1-$3 USD per click plus affiliate commissions, depending on the product you promote, and when someone signs up through your link, you can earn $5 – $500 USD, or even more.
I was canoeing recently, and my coach was also a ski coach. He said that he made an average monthly profit of 20,000 to 30,000 by writing introductions to ski resorts and nearby shops and then adding affiliate links to Agoda and Hotels.com before the outbreak of pneumonia.
So how do you earn this type of income? Recommend products or services that you believe in or have used.
One way to lose readers is to recommend junk products because you’ll get paid if they click through and sign up. But it’s just not worth it.
Focus on finding a few products that you truly believe in and/or use and see if they offer an affiliate program. Not all companies do, or they may hide their affiliate programs from a select few bloggers.
Simply contact the manufacturers of your favorite products and/or services to see if they have an affiliate program. If they do, there will likely be a minimum traffic requirement. Once you have an increase in traffic to your site, you can contact them.
In fact, I also started out by blogging and then became an Amazon Affiliate (they call it an Associate) to generate income.
You can also find some Affiliate Marketing networks, such as CJ
4. Sponsored Content
Blogger income potential: $50 – $1000 per post
The more traffic your blog gets, the more people or advertisers will contact you and be willing to pay to have their content published on your blog.
In order to publish their posts on your blog, they usually pay $50-$1,000. It is a bit like the Advertorial that you often see.
You might be thinking, "Wow, that's a lot of money just to publish a post someone else wrote."
But you need to be careful because Google doesn't like this practice, and if they think you're publishing a lot of paid posts, there's a chance that Google will blacklist your blog (which is pretty scary and will keep you from ever recovering).
You also need to be careful about how often you post sponsored content, as some posts can be low quality or contain spammy links. If you are being linked to low quality blog posts with low quality links, Google will notice, and so will your readers.
So be very careful about accepting sponsored posts, or go for the higher fees and re-write them yourself.
More importantly, too much quality content can turn off readers.
In fact, the credibility of many blogs is built on their neutrality. When you accept sponsored content, there is a chance that your fans will doubt its authenticity, which will have a negative impact in the long run.
To protect your readers and your reputation with Google, choose sponsored content carefully!
5. Display ads directly on your blog
Potential monthly income for bloggers: $200 – $2,500 per impression
Some brands or companies will contact you and hope to place banner ads on your website to promote their products.
You can contact companies whose blogs match your target audience and niche market and mention to them that their ads will appear on every page of your blog, giving them maximum visibility.
You can usually make between $200 – $2,500 per month per ad, depending on the niche of your blog.
You can sell 728×90 banner ads at the highest price because they are the most visible when you put them in the title of your blog. But be careful not to put too many ads in your blog, as you can only sell a limited number of direct display ads at a time.
You can also put smaller ads in the sidebar of your blog. Some bloggers make a lot of money by placing 100px/100px ads.
6. Social Media Promotion
Blogger income potential: $500 – $3000 per promotion
If you have a lot of influence in your target market, you can make money by promoting your products or services on social media. The more followers you have, the more money you can make.
Paid promotion is one of the actions that can attract a large social audience to buy.
For example, some bloggers with large Instagram followers make at least $5,000 per month promoting products to their target market (especially fashion and travel). Of course, they also have a blog, and as the blog grows, their number of social media followers will also increase accordingly, thereby increasing their income.
7. Paid Social Media Content Promotion
Blogger income potential: $30,000+
This is how high earning bloggers make money. Depending on the niche you write about and the affiliate company you work with, you can turn traffic from Facebook or Google ads into a money-making avenue.
Basically, the way it works is - you buy Facebook traffic to your blog and you get charged $0.3 – $2 USD per click, but then a certain percentage of that traffic goes through your Affiliate link to target company registrations or purchases, and you earn a commission.
You can then decide how much money to spend on ad clicks to maximize your commission income.
While this does require some Facebook and/or Google Ads testing, over time, when you find the right audience mix (e.g., one that earns you $5 in revenue for every $1 you spend on ads), you can scale up quickly.
I know bloggers who spend over $20,000 to drive traffic to their site and they make over $30,000 in profit from that ad! I know bloggers who make over $1 million a month doing this.
8. Courses
Blogger Income Potential: $???
Although it is difficult to create courses soon after starting a blog, creating courses is a great way to make money from your blog. It is not so easy to make money by teaching your expertise.
You can use WordPress plugins to teach courses on your own WordPress blog, or through third-party websites such as Teachable and Udemy.
I have many blogger friends who have created multiple 6-figure courses, and some bloggers have even created 7-figure courses (yes, you read that right, they made $1 million by creating courses on their blogs).
If you are thinking about starting a course, do some research on what is out there and who you will be competing against, because I have seen many bloggers spend a lot of time preparing courses that ultimately don’t work out well.
If you are planning to create a course that others are already offering, think carefully about how to make your course unique and why people should buy your course instead of someone else's. Will your readers buy it? It is usually best to create a course after you have been blogging for a while, when you will know your readers better and know what types of products they are willing to buy.
Maybe because I was shy, I wrote blogs for 6 years before I started my first online course, and I made about 150,000 yuan. But in fact, the preparation time for online courses is longer than expected, but in addition to the financial income, you will learn a lot of business knowledge.
9. Company Consulting
Blogger Income Potential: $500 – $15,000 per Consultation
Over the past few years, many different types of companies have hired me as their SEO consultant or chosen our services to join and work with their marketing team.
While I do a lot of consulting work, I only choose those that I am truly interested in or that I expect the company to develop a long-term relationship with. If you become an expert in that target market or have a unique set of insights, those companies may be willing to pay more for your specialized knowledge.
If you want to receive consulting invitations from companies, the best way to do it is through LinkedIn. One easy way to get yourself consulting job opportunities is to network with different bloggers and people on LinkedIn who work at companies in your target market.
Then start using LinkedIn to post some of your articles. Also, the next time a company contacts you to give feedback on their product, ask them if they would be interested in having you test it yourself and join the discussion.
10. Brand Collaboration
Blogger Potential Monthly Income: Up to $25,000
Once you start gaining traction in your niche, brands will start contacting you to discuss some “mutual collaboration” options.
When this happens, be prepared and have ideas on how you can help their brand reach your readers. If you can partner with the right brand, you will benefit as well because they will share your posts and introduce you to their fans via email.
By working with some big brands, you can already gain a large number of followers. Another benefit of working with big brands is that many times they have a large budget, which means they have enough money to work with you.
Most brands will want to start small with you, but don’t sell yourself short. If a brand is approaching you and they want to work with you, be open to having a conversation.
Over time, you should look to build mutually beneficial, long-term brand partnerships that can become a solid revenue model for your platform.
11. Podcast Sponsorship
Blogger income potential: $100 - $500 per episode
Podcasts are still a developing niche market locally, and it is difficult to make big money unless there is a large audience.
But it is relatively easy to cooperate with a podcast hosting platform like Podbean, because Podbean can be registered for free, and it can place small advertisements before and after your podcast to make money.
You can make money just by uploading podcasts regularly, or once you have a certain level of fame, you can earn income by cooperating with manufacturers and selling advertisements on podcasts.
But as mentioned before, the podcast market is still developing, so it’s hard to know what businesses are willing to cooperate with and how much they should charge. The general price is about $100-$500 per episode.
If you are a new blogger, I would recommend that you start podcasting after you have been blogging for 6 months or more. Otherwise, you will be too busy to do it because podcasting is a lot of work.
12.1 to 1 Private Tutoring
Blogger income potential: $50,000+
Offering private lessons is one way you can earn a steady income while connecting with your audience.
I learned a lot about negotiation and how to help readers through negotiation. If the content is good, it will not only attract local customers, but my first customer was from Malaysia. He spent 2 whole days learning from me in order to improve his company's business.
One of the challenges is that even if I only talk to my clients for 30 minutes a week, or an hour every two weeks, it takes much longer than just the conversation because each meeting requires time to prepare and to constantly think about their needs.
So at the same time, no matter how big the blog is, I will only provide 1-on-1 coaching to 3 clients.
13. Conference presentation
Potential income for bloggers: $1,000-$15,000 per speech
Giving a speech is not easy and requires a lot of time to prepare and collect information. I have heard that some bloggers can earn $200,000 in a year just by giving speeches!
14. Publish a book
Blogger Potential Income: ???
When you have achieved success in your field, have good enough writing skills, and have a basic number of readers, then you can consider publishing a book. Publishing houses are always welcome to talented and professional writers. Although it sounds a bit crazy to start thinking about publishing a book now, as long as your blog develops well, nothing is impossible.
You can never imagine how great your possibilities are through blogging. It is an adventure in life and we are moving towards this goal.
15. Part-time writing
Potential income from blogging: $300-$1000 per post
Finally, since blogging is also a form of writing, the more you write, the better your writing skills will be. It also means that you will have more writing opportunities to show your expertise. Many companies and publishing houses are looking for experts in various fields to write for them and are happy to pay them. Many new bloggers will take on writing as an additional source of income when they first start.
Another benefit of taking writing jobs is that it increases your exposure and builds your reputation. Generally, freelance writers can earn $300-$1,000 per piece, although longer pieces will earn you more.
I have also tried copy-writing for corporate clients and earned a good commission!
There are many other ways to earn income, such as making money from videos on Youtube or Blog, setting up membership privileges (like Patreon), etc. Please remember that you are building a personal platform, and the money you make is proportional to your creativity.
About Blogging Niche Market
A niche market, also known as a small market, targets a narrower customer group.
How much you can earn by blogging is largely related to the niche positioning of the blog.
For example, if your blog is about second-hand books, then you can only make money by selling books through your blog, but you won't make much that way, unless of course your books are of high value, high demand, and high reviews.
However, if your blog is about money management, you can easily make money because you can get bigger membership fees, higher advertiser fees or CPMs, and sell related products in exchange for more money.
Therefore, you should choose a niche that you are truly interested in (this will help you stick with it) and can also help you make money (if you want to make money through blogging). However, not all bloggers want to use blogging to generate income.
I have met (and even worked with) many bloggers over the past 3 years, and it turns out that there is money to be made in almost every niche. Based on my own past research and experience, here is a list of the most profitable and some of the least profitable niches.
Some bloggers are able to successfully combine multiple niches, such as "travel and product reviews" to maximize their chances of making more money. But please keep in mind that these numbers are averages from observations and surveys of 481 bloggers in different niches.
