So you’ve finally decided to start a blog…
You want to live a life where no one has the right to tell you what to do, how to do it, or when to do it.
That's exactly what we want, right?
The truth is, blogging can give us such freedom and luxury.
But in order to achieve this, we need to make sure we are doing the right things.
So, once you have your blog set up , you need to start writing posts.
Your first blog post will become the main foundation of your blogging business. If you write it wrong, you are doomed to fail. But if you write it right, you will have laid an excellent foundation for success.
It doesn’t have to be anything amazing, but you want your first visitors to come back to your blog after reading your first post.
You want to hook them so deeply that they can’t help but tell their friends about this amazing blog (your blog) they just discovered.
Most people don’t worry too much about this at first. After installing WordPress , most bloggers just want to publish content and let the world know they are online.
Sorry, that won't work.
The harsh truth is that if your first article fails to capture the interest of your first visitors on a deep level, you will lose them forever.
So, with that scary truth bomb out of the way, let’s look at how to write a great first blog post.
How to Write Your First Blog Post
As someone who is just starting out as a blogger, here are some things you should mention in your first post.
1. Who are you?
You are new to the online world and nobody knows you. If I am going to trust you and bookmark your blog, then I need to know who you are.
People want to connect with you on a deep level. Tell them:
- What experiences have you had in your life?
- Is this your first blog?
- Who are you as a person, as a professional, as a blogger?
The more you tell about yourself, the more accustomed your readers will become to you, and the more they will trust you and be willing to listen to what you have to say.
Not only should you talk about yourself in words, you should also show some pictures.
Don’t just be the “stranger behind the keyboard.”
Putting pictures of yourself on your blog will make you appear authentic, and your readers will begin to trust you.
Most importantly, tell (and show) your readers everything they need to know about who you are. The more information you provide, the easier it will be for your readers to connect with you.
2. Why do you blog?
This is very important. If people don't know why you are doing something, they have no reason to trust you.
One thing you should do when answering this question is to keep your audience in mind.
Ask yourself:
- Why would anyone visit my blog?
- What are they looking for?
- What can my readers get out of this?
Tell your audience why you are there. They will appreciate it.
They will want to connect with you.
3. What will you blog about?
This question is similar to question 2. Once you answer question 2, this question will be easier to answer.
Tell your readers what they should expect on your blog.
Let them know exactly what to expect every time they visit your website.
It’s also a good idea to let them know how often you update your blog, as well as the days and times you’ll update (if you’ve set a schedule).
Stop creating a general blog where you write about anything and everything. Make sure your blog is focused on a specific topic. This will increase your authority and allow your audience to see you as an expert in your field.
4. Who do you write for?
In your first post, don’t forget to talk about your target audience.
- Who will you write for?
- What kind of person are they (ambitious, lazy, very busy, etc.)?
The key is for you to empathize with your readers so that they feel welcome and trust that you understand their problems.
Come up with a touching story that lets your audience know you're there for them.
5. How can they participate?
You need to let your readers know how they can get involved.
- Do you encourage reviews?
- So what about guest posting?
- How can readers email you if they have questions, suggestions or complaints?
You need to let them know that they can contact you if they need to. Also, don't be afraid to encourage disagreement.
Some of your readers will disagree with you at times, and if they can’t share those disagreements with you, they won’t trust you.
Therefore, please make every effort to ensure that feedback is valued and encouraged.
If you would like to be contacted at a specific time of day or week, please let them know that time.
6. Clearly state your blogging goals
It stands to reason. You should share your blogging goals with your readers in your first post.
- What do you hope to achieve through your blog?
- Where do you want your blog to be in 3-6 months?
Sharing your goals with your readers will help them understand that you value transparency.
When you share your goals with them, they will be willing to help you achieve them.
Write your introductory blog post
Starting a blog isn’t always the most important thing; you also need to make sure you get it right from the start. If your first blog post contains all of the elements I’ve mentioned here, then you’re off to a good start.
Make sure they know you’re an open, honest, and passionate blogger.
Let them know you’re not here to sell them snake oil.
